Working Safely Is Not a ‘Requirement’… It’s a Skill!
Wednesday, October 4, 2023 9:00am – 10:00am
While we never blame employees for making errors and we know we can never eliminate errors, that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t help them learn to work in a way that will minimize them. This presentation will describe 3 critical techniques that, taken together, make up the skill of working safely. By offering these techniques as a skill to be developed for their own benefit, rather than a requirement to be enforced by management, we will show how to break down some of the barriers to improvement of safety performance. The presentation will move quickly and with some humor through these 3 techniques…. 1) Calibrating our safety meters, 2) Developing Spider-Sense, and 3) Creating small safety habits. Making use of story-telling techniques, examples from our animal friends and some videos, the attendees will be shown how working safely is not something to be demanded, or observed, but a skill to be taught and developed just like any other job skill.

From Calm to Crisis: What can you do to intervene?
Wednesday, October 4, 2023 9:00am – 10:00am
In today’s fast-paced world, mental health has become an increasingly critical aspect of our overall well-being. This presentation aims to provide an introduction to mental health, emphasizing the role that every person can play in early intervention and support.
The session will begin with an exploration of the fundamentals of mental health and delve into the various factors that contribute to mental health challenges, such as stress, work pressures, and personal lives. We will discuss the vital role that each individual can play, as we explore how every person can contribute to the early identification of mental health concerns.
Central to the presentation is the discussion of Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training and its role in facilitating ongoing learning and support. Participants will discover how MHFA training provides individuals with practical tools and strategies to intervene before and during a mental health crises, promote self-care, and engage in open conversations about mental well-being.
Moreover, the session will highlight the benefits of MHFA training beyond crisis intervention, emphasizing its capacity to enhance overall mental health literacy and promote a culture of well-being within organizations and communities.

The Future of Hearing Health and Safety to Enhance Employee Engagement and Workplace Safety Management
Wednesday, October 4, 2023 9:00am – 10:00am
There is a concerning increase in hearing loss particularly among the young workforce. Evolving work and nonwork noise hazards combined with ototoxic hazards and personal risk factors are now well-recognized for contributing to this hearing health decline. Hearing loss has a widespread effect on the worker’s physical and mental health and overall workplace safety and can impact all elements of OSHA’s most frequently cited violations. OSHA’s continuing emphasis on employee engagement, NIOSH’s Total Worker Health program and the new FDA Over-The-Counter (OTC) Hearing Aid Rule (Oct 2022) provide a strong framework for worker directed self-improvement in hearing safety and health – at and outside work. EEOC’s update to Hearing Disabilities in the Workplace (Jan 2023) along with OSHA’s bulletin on ‘Hearing Conservation for the Hearing-Impaired Worker’ emphasizes the need to address worker needs and rights. The presentation will outline a new approach that augments Hearing Conservation by emphasizing worker involvement in self-monitoring and self-improvement that can be readily and cost-effectively integrated into existing training and safety programs. Employee involvement strategies, maintenance of privacy and confidentiality, management commitment, direct/indirect benefits and program effectiveness measurement will be presented.

The 4 Domains of Safety Leadership: Measurable Traits That Change Everything
Wednesday, October 4, 2023 1:00pm – 2:00pm
Employees make choices every day that impact the safety of themselves and others. The most powerful influence on those choices is the leader, who must inspire safe behavior in employees through their consistent actions. After five years of research, Caterpillar statistically validated exactly what those actions are and how to measure them. To be an effective safety leader requires mastery of four core domains and fourteen elements. The most effective leaders create a strong culture of accountability; develop meaningful connectivity with those they lead; demonstrate credible safety consciousness; and build trust amongst their team. Participants will learn how to begin fostering and measuring these leadership behaviors personally and across their organization.

Securing the Site: The Essential Role of Cybersecurity in Construction
Wednesday, October 4, 2023 1:00pm – 2:00pm
Cybersecurity (much like safety) must be a continuous effort for many reasons; including an evolving threat landscape and the proliferation of devices and technologies used in construction. Companies need to follow best practices and build a program/culture of cyber safety; which includes adapting with new technologies and educating employees (awareness). This presentation will explore the importance of cybersecurity in construction, how it is aligned to construction safety best practices and why companies need to build programs around cyber safety into their business plans.
Learning Objectives:
- Best practices for cybersecurity and risk mitigation, including cyber insurance
- Impacts of an incident, including cost, quality, and reputational impacts
- Incident response plans
- How to build a cyber safety program that helps subcontractors, GCs and architects understand their role in risk mitigation.

Cannabis Laws, Impairment & Workplace Safety: 2023 Update
Wednesday, October 4, 2023 2:30pm – 3:30pm
The Chesapeake region is now universally home to legal cannabis – both medical and recreational use and sale. How can companies need to revise their programs to address both medical use and those workers who may choose to use legal weed off-duty? We’ll explore the changing landscape of cannabis regulation, both state and potential revisions of federal laws. How will employment law and workers compensation case decisions have enhanced protections for those using cannabis for medicinal purposes or to aid in opiate addiction cessation? What is OSHA’s perspective on post-accident drug testing and employer liability for worker impairment on the job.

Safety Mirage: Seeing Through the Illusion of Safety Assumptions
Thursday, October 5, 2023 9:00am – 10:00am
Our assumptions play a critical role in shaping how we view the world. Examples of assumptions in safety such as “Zero Injury” campaigns and measuring safety performance by incident rates have become entrenched within our philosophy of safety management. Organizations promote these assumptions as the foundation of their safety culture without question and with unwavering commitment. In many cases, such assumptions are unvalidated and potentially destructive, yet are still widely accepted. What other assumptions have been made in safety? Are we really helping in the pursuit of saving lives? Let us explore some assumptions in safety and inquire about the deep-rooted beliefs that accompany them. As a result, we’ll begin to question unchallenged assumptions we often consider to be fact.
